#J3. A Park Bench

  • From what vantage point (camera angle) are all of these images captured?

  • It is a wide shot, further away from the subject.

  • Where do you think the photographer was to capture these images?

  • The different types of people and activities that happened at that one place.

  • What kind/type of light is in the images? Is the light consistent?

  • Natural light. The lighting for the most part is consistent because most of the pictures are taken during the day.

  • What does the light tell you about the photographer and his life?

  • The light tells me that the photographer is really carefree and goes with the flow of life.

  • What seasons are shown in the images?  How do you know?
  • All four seasons are shown in the images. I can tell when it is fall/winter because the people are wearing heavy puffer coats and/or there is snow on the ground. I know it is spring/summer because people are in t-shirts enjoying lunch on the bench outside.
  • Why do you think the photographer did this series?
  • It is interesting to see different people living their lives in the same location.
  • What stories did you find in the images?
  • One person had to use the bench as an emergency room when he cut his harm and paramedics arrived.
  • Describe your favorite image from this series.
  • My favorite image is the three guys eating lunch on the bench. They are all just chatting and having a break from work. I love the candid moment.
  • Write the story that comes to mind from your favorite image. (One paragraph minimum).
  • These guys have just gone on their lunch break from work. They grabbed their lunches and walked to the nearby park. Walking around chatting, they found an empty park bench and decided it would be a suitable place to have lunch. One guy brought up a piece of wood for his chair, so he could use the bench as a table. They laugh and talk about funny stories from the week.
  • What subjects can you think of that would make an interesting photographic series over several decades? (A decade is 10 years.) List at least 5.
  • I think a subway could be really cool to take pictures in and see the different types of people passing by.
  • What subjects can you think of that would make an interesting photographic series over 365 days (1 year)? List at least 5.
    • A tree

    • A flower bush

    • Playground

    •  Pond
    • Construction site
  • What subjects can you think of that would make an interesting photographic series over one month (30 days)? List at least 5.
  • If you got a coffee everyday you could take pictures of it

    •  What you eat everyday
    • The mall
    • Dog park
    • The progress of some sort of art project

  • Do all of your series ideas involve people (or traces of human presence) or no people? Why or why not?
  • Some involve people and some do not. I think trees and flowers are cool to look at over the year because trees turn beautiful colors in fall and then the leaves die in winter and come back with flowers in spring.
